CO2 Laser

The use of lasers has transformed the field of dermatology. It offers effective solutions for  various purposes, including skin conditions and cosmetic improvements. One type of laser involves the use of carbon dioxide (CO2) lasers. These lasers emit a concentrated beam of light, resulting in the removal of targeted areas on the superficial layer of our skin.

One use for CO2 lasers includes the removal of unwanted skin growths. These include moles, warts, milia warts, milia seeds or oil seeds, skin tags, syringoma, linear epidermal nevi (birthmarks), sebaceous hyperplasia, and other types of skin bumps. These skin growths usually appear in areas where the skin creases or folds (i.e., on the neck, groin area, armpits, eyelids, thighs, and sometimes underneath the breasts). Our CO2 Laser Treatment specifically targets these skin bumps with minimal to no damage to the surrounding skin tissue, leading to shorter recovery time and less risk for scarring.

If you’re wondering if CO2 Laser Treatment can help address your skin problems, read on to find out more!

What is CO2 Laser Treatment?

CO2 Laser Treatment is a type of laser technology used in dermatology procedures that uses pulses of laser light to remove targeted areas in the superficial layers of the skin. It emits a concentrated beam of light at a wavelength of 10,600 nanometers, which is absorbed by water within our skin cells. This vaporizes the targeted areas in the epidermis, the outermost layer of our skin. The dermis, or the middle layer, heats up and promotes the production of new collagen fibers. As the specific area heals, new skin gradually replaces the old, damaged layers, leading to smoother and firmer skin.

Our CO2 Laser Treatment is a minimally invasive, extremely precise procedure that acts solely on the skin bumps, with minimal to no damage to the surrounding skin tissue. The procedure takes about a minute or less per skin bump, depending on the size of the bump. In most cases, the bumps will be removed immediately after treatment, however, small red marks will usually be seen where the skin bumps were before. These form scabs over the next few days before shedding off, which leaves a smooth red piece of new skin in its place. For moles, you will be able to see if they have been entirely removed as the treated area is recovering. If not, a touch up may be required.

If you think you would greatly benefit from this procedure, as with any procedure here at our clinic, you must consult with our dermatologist first. Our dermatologist will assess your skin condition and its severity to check if you may have other skin issues that may hinder you from achieving your skin goal or if this treatment may not be appropriate for you. During the consultation, you will be guided through the basics of the treatment, its inclusions, and aftercare.

On the day of the procedure, our licensed technician will escort you to one of our treatment rooms for skin prep. For maximum comfort during the procedure, a local numbing cream may be used. Once you are in the treatment room, you will be asked to wear special eyewear such as goggles or plasters to protect your eyes during the duration of your laser treatment session. Our doctor will then personally conduct the procedure in the specific areas by moving the laser wand slowly over the area of the skin being treated. The CO2 laser creates shallow, open wounds in the targeted areas and induces significant inflammation, resulting in vigorous tissue repair and renewal. Your skin will be highly sensitive directly after the procedure, so skin regeneration tapes will be used to cover the treated areas to prevent scarring and pigmentation, and for a more natural result.

Why do people choose to undergo CO2 Laser Treatment?

Our CO2 Laser Treatment has several benefits. It is a minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure that improves the condition and appearance of the skin by removing skin bumps with minimal to no damage to surrounding skin tissues. It offers minimal to no pain or discomfort and no major side effects as well.

CO2 Laser Treatment is specifically beneficial for the following conditions:

  • Moles
  • Warts
  • Milia warts
  • Milia seeds or oil seeds
  • Skin tags
  • Syringoma
  • Linear epidermal nevi (birthmarks)
  • Sebaceous hyperplasia
  • Other types of skin bumps

Who is a good candidate for CO2 Laser Treatment?

Our CO2 Laser Treatment caters to most healthy adults with skin bumps, depending on the skin conditions. Those with sun-sensitive skin may benefit from this procedure at an earlier age. While these bumps normally don’t necessarily require removal, they may still be removed if they bother you.

If you’re also looking for a minimally invasive, non-surgical treatment to remove these bumps without damaging the adjacent skin with minimal downtime, this treatment might be for you. Our CO2 Laser Treatment also provides long-lasting results while targeting specific areas and has less risk and downtime than surgical procedures.

Recovery and Aftercare

Since our CO2 Laser Treatment is non-surgical, it involves no scalpel, minimal to no pain or discomfort, and no major side effects. Mild post-procedural reddening and peeling of the targeted area may occur, but these usually subside in a few days, depending on the depth of your treatment.

Smaller bumps may require a week or two for the wound to fully close and heal, while larger bumps such as moles may take up to 2 months to completely heal.

Additionally, you will have to wear skin regeneration tapes for around 3 to 7 days to prevent scarring and pigmentation, and for a more natural healing. These tapes must be changed every day or every other day, but you can shower with it on or wash your face – you can even wear makeup with it underneath. In case the tapes fall off, clean and dry the area first prior to replacing the tapes. You may resume your normal activities after putting on new skin regeneration tapes.

While the treated area is healing, you may notice that the area may turn red or blackish in color, and crusts or scabs may form. It is important to note that you should not pick on, rub, or scratch the scabs as this may interfere with the healing and increase your risk for infection and scarring. These usually fall off on their own anyway within 1 to 2 weeks, leaving behind a smooth, dry, and pink surface.

Other post-treatment care that you should keep in mind include the following:

  • Avoid directly washing the treated areas during the 3 to 7 days period of using the skin regeneration tapes
  • After the 3 to 7 days period of using the skin regeneration tapes, clean the treated area regularly – you should gently wash your skin with water or diluted cleanser to prevent infection, minimize scabbing, and help your skin heal faster
  • Avoid any harsh products after using the skin regeneration tapes
  • You may use makeup on top of the skin regeneration tapes, but you should limit its use since they can irritate the skin while it is healing
  • Use moisturizers and ointments to support the healing process after using the skin regeneration tapes
  • Minimize direct sun exposure and use proper sun protection such as sunscreen
  • Avoid situations that would put you at risk for infections while the wounds are still healing, such as swimming and strenuous exercise, for the first week after the procedure
